Means practical knowledge on electrical systems including installing, maintaining, operating, or repairing electrical equipment.




p---- ( pico (prefix for 10*-12. )

P---- ( Power; Plug. )

PA---- ( Power Amplifier or Public Address System. )

PA-Public Address---- ( This feature isn’t used a lot nowadays except as a switch for internal, illegal modifications. )

Packet Radio---- ( A computer-to-computer communications mode in which information is broken into short bursts. The bursts )packets) also contain addressing and error-detection information. or A digital communications technique involving radio transmission of short bursts (frames) of data containing addressing, control and error-checking information in each transmission )

PACSAT---- ( AMSAT packet-radio satellite with store-and-forward capability. )

PacTOR---- ( Digital mode combining aspects of packet and AMTOR. )

PAD---- ( Packet assembler/disassembler, a device that assembles and disassembles packet (frames). It is connected between a data terminal (or computer) and a modem in a packet-radio station (see also TNC). )

Paddle---- ( Morse code key or CW key. )

PAM---- ( Pulse-amplitude modulation. )

Parallel circuit ---- ( An electrical circuit in which the electrons follow through more than one path in going from the negative supply terminal to the positive terminal. )

Parasitic Beam Antenna---- ( Another name for the beam antenna. )

Parasitic Element---- ( Part of a directive antenna that derives energy fron mutual coupling with the driven element. Parasitic elements are not connected directly to the feed line. )

Parity Check---- ( Addition of noninformation bits to data, making the number of ones in a group of bits always either even or odd. )

Part 15---- ( Relates to the section of FCC rules which pertain to unlicensed stations. )

Part 95---- ( Fcc rules. )

Pass---- ( An orbit of a satellite. )

Passband---- ( The range of frequencies handled by a satellite translator or transponder.or The band of frequencies that a filter conducts with essentially no attenuation. )

Payload---- ( A package taken onboard a space shuttle, such as the"Shuttle Amateur Radio Experiment (SAREX), which allows shuttle astronaut/hams to communicate with other hams from space. )

PBS---- ( Packet bulletin-board system. )

PBT Pass Band---- ( A function that electronically reduces interference by narrowing IF bandwidth. )

PC---- ( Printed Circuit . )

PD---- ( Power dissipation. )

Peak (voltage or current)---- ( The maximum value relative to zero that an ac voltage or current attains during any cycle. )

Peak and Tweak---- ( To illegally modify a CB radio for more output power or illegal overmodulation. )

Peak Inverse Voltage (PIV)---- ( The highest voltage that can be tolerated by a reverse biased PN junction before current is conducted. or The maximum reverse-biased voltage which a semiconductor is rated to handle safely. Exceeding the peak inverse rating can result in junction breakdown and device destruction. )

Peak, Tweak, and Freak---- ( To perform illegal radio adjustments (increase power output or modulation) in addition to adding illegal channels. )

Peak Envelope Power (PEP)---- ( The average power of a signal at its largest amplitude peak. )

Peaked up---- ( Same as "tuned up". )

Peak power---- ( Maximum wattage. )

Peak-to-peak (voltage or current)---- ( The value of the total swing of an ac voltage or current from its peak negative value to its peak positive value, ordinarily twice the value of the peak voltage or current. )

Peak Value---- ( The highest value of a signal during the measuring time. If measured voltage varies in value from 1 to 10 V over a measuring period, the peak value would be the highest measured, 10 V. )

Pecuniary---- ( Payment of any type, whether money or other goods. Amateurs may not operate their stations in return for any type of payment. )

Penetrator---- ( (also called Super Penetrator) A 5/8 wave base station ground plane antenna. )

Pentode---- ( A five element vacuum tube with a cathode, a control grid, a screen grid, a suppressor grid, and a plate. )

PEP(peak envelope power)---- ( The average power supplied to the antenna transmission line by a transmitter during one RF cycle at the crest of the modulation envelope taken under normal operating conditions. )

PEP---- ( Peak Envelope Power; most often refers to SSB output. )

PEP---- ( Peak Envelope Power, RF power at Maximum amplitude. )

PEP---- ( Peak envelope power - the average power of a signal at its largest amplitude peak. )

Perigee---- ( The point in a satellite's orbit where it is closest to Earth. )

Period---- ( The time required for a satellite to make one complete revolution about the Earth. See Anomalistic period and Nodal period. )

Period (T)---- ( The duration of one ac voltage or current cycle, measured in seconds (s). )

Permeability(u)---- ( The ratio of the magnetic flux density of an iron, ferrite, or similar core in an electromagnet compared to the magnetic flux density of an air core, when the current through the electromagnet is held constant. )

PEV---- ( Peak envelope voltage. )

pF---- ( picofarad. )

pH---- ( picohenry. )

Phase 1---- ( The term given to the earliest, short-lived OSCAR satellites that were not equipped with solar cells. When their batteries were depleted, they ceased operating. )

Phase 2---- ( Low-altitude OSCAR satellites. Equipped with solar panels that powered the spacecraft systems and recharged their batteries, these satellites have been shown to be capable of lasting up to five years (OSCARs 6, 7 and 8, for example). )

Phase 3---- ( Extended-range, high-orbit OSCAR satellites with very long-lived solar power systems (OSCARs 10 and 13, for example). )

Phase 4---- ( Proposed OSCAR satellites in geostationary orbits. )

Phone---- ( Emissions carrying speech or other sound information having designators A, C, D, F, G, H, J or R as the first symbol; 1, 2 or 3 as the second symbol; E as the third symbol. Also speech emissions having B as the first symbol; 7, 8 or 9 as the second symbol; E as the third symbol. )

Phone ---- ( Another name for voice communications. )

Phone Emission---- ( The FCC name for voice or other sound transmissions. )

Phone patch---- ( A device which hooks a base unit to the telephone. )

Phonetic Alphabet---- ( Standard words used on voice modes to make it easier to understand letters of the alphabet, such as those in call signs. The call sign KA6LMN stated phonetically is " Kilo Alfa Six Lima Mike November". )

PIA---- ( Public Information Assistant. )

Pico---- ( The metric prefix for 10*-12, or divide by 1,000,000,000,000. )

PID---- ( Protocol identifier. Used in AX.25 to specify the network-layer protocol used. )

Pill(s)---- ( Reference to transistor finals in linear amplifiers. The greater number of "pills", the larger the amplifier is. )

PIN---- ( Positive-intrinsic-negative (semiconductor). )

PIO---- ( Public Information Officer. )

Pirate---- ( Station using an existing callsign and illegally operating on the air . )

PIV---- ( Peak inverse voltage. )

PL---- ( (see CTCSS). )

PL-259---- ( A connector used for coaxial cable, usually at HF. It is also known as a male UHF connector. It is an inexpensive and common connector, but it is not weatherproof, nor is its impedance constant over frequency. )

Plate---- ( See anode, usually used with vacuum tubes. )

PLL---- ( Phase Locked Loop--A circuit to synthesize the different frequencies a radio will operate on. )

PLL Phase-Lock-Loop---- ( The digital circuitry which determines your frequencies. One chip does it all compared to the "olden" days where a separate transmit and receive crystal was required for each channel. )

PM---- ( Phase modulation. )

PMOS---- ( P-channel (metal-oxide semiconductor). )

PN Junction---- ( The region that occurs when P-type semiconductor material is placed in contact with N-type semiconductor material. )

PNP---- ( Positive-negative positive (transistor); A transistor that has a layer of N-type semiconductor material sandwiched between layers of P-type semiconductor material. )

Polarization---- ( The electrical-field characteristic of a radio wave. An antenna that is parallel to the surface of the earth, such as a dipole, produces horizontally polarized waves. One that is perpendicular to the earth's surface, such as a quarter-wave vertical, produces vertically polarized waves. An antenna that has both horizontal and vertical polarization is said to be circularly polarized. )

Portable Device---- ( A radio transmitting device designed to have a transmitting antenna that is generally within 20 centimeters of a human body. )

Positive--- ( Yes, affirmative. )

pot---- ( potentiometer. )

Potentiometer---- ( Another name for a "variable resistor". The value of a potentiometer can be changed over a range of values without removing it from a circuit. )

Pound meter---- ( S-meter. )

Pounds---- ( Numbers on S-meter; Graduations on the signal meter. )

Power---- ( Power is the rate at which work is done. One watt of power is equal to one volt of EMF, causing a current of one ampere. )

Power---- ( Power is expressed in three ways; (1) Peak envelope power; (2) Mean power; and (3) Carrier power. )

Power---- ( The rate of energy consumption. We calculate power in an electrical circuit by multiplying the voltage applied to the circuit times the current through the circuit (P = IE). )

Power Conditioner---- ( Another term for a power supply. )

Power microphone---- ( Microphone with built-in preamp system; used for better audio and distance. )

Power (P)---- ( The rate of electrical-energy use, measured in watts (W). )

Power Supply---- ( A device that is used to convert the available voltage and currant source often 120V AC to a form that is required for a specific circuit requirement such as 12 Volt DC. )

Power Supply---- ( A circuit that provides a direct-current output at some desired voltage from an ac input voltage. )

P-P---- ( Peak-to-peak; as in peak-to-peak voltage . )

PPRS---- ( Pacific Packet Radio Society. )

PRAC---- ( Public Relations Advisory Committee. )

PRB-1---- ( The limited federal government preemption of local zoning ordinances which states that local zoning authorities must be reasonable and that regulation must represent the minimum practicable to accomplish its legitimate purpose. )

Preamp---- ( Power; microphone. )

Precession---- ( An effect that is characteristic of AO-10 and Phase 3 orbits. The satellite apogee SSP will gradually change over time. )

Prescaler---- ( A circuit used aheadof a counter to extend the counter range to higher frequencies. A counter capable of operating up to 50 MHz can count up to 500 MHz when used with a ~10 prescaler . )

Primary---- ( The master station in a master-slave relationship; The master maintains control and is able to perform actions that the slave cannot (Compare secondary). )

Priority Watch---- ( A reception mode that when selected for a frequency is always periodcally checked when the VFO is set to a different frequency. )

Priority Traffic---- ( Emergency-related messages, but not as important as "Emergency traffic". )

Procedural Signal (prosign)---- ( One or two letters sent as a single character. Amateurs use prosigns in CW contacts as a short way to indicate the operator's intention. Some examples are k for "Go Ahead," or *ar for "End of Message." (The bar over letters indicates that we send the prosign as one character.) )

Product Detector---- ( A device that allows a receiver to process CW and SSB signals. )

Project OSCAR---- ( The California-based group, among the first to recognize the potential of space for Amateur Radio; responsible for OSCARs I through IV. )

PROM---- ( Programmable read-only memory. )

Propagation---- ( The means by which radio waves travel from one place to another; The study of how radio waves travel. )

Protocol---- ( A formal set of rules and procedures for the exchange of information within a network. )

PSHR---- ( Public Service Honor Roll. )

PSK---- ( Phase-shift keying. )

PTO---- ( Permeability-tuned oscillator. )

PTT---- ( Push to talk, the switch in a transmitter circuit that activates the microphone and transmission circuitry. )

P-Type Impurity---- ( A doping atom with an excess of holes that is added to semiconductor material to give it a net positive charge. )

Public Service---- ( Activities involving Amateur Radio that hams perform to benefit their communities. )

Pulse---- ( Emissions having designators with K, L, M, P, Q, V or W as the first symbol; 0, 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9 or X as the sceond symbol; A, B, C, D,E, F, N, W or X as the third symbol.. )
