Technical Terms & Abbreviations---

m---- ( meter (length); milli (perfix for 10*-3). )

M---- ( Mega (prefix for 10*6; Meter (Instrument). )

mA---- ( Milliampere (1/1,000 ampere) . )

Machine---- ( A repeater system. )

mAh---- ( Milliamperhour. )

Magnetic mount or Mag-Mount---- ( An antenna with a magnetic base that permits quick installation and removal from a motor vehicle or other metal surface. )

Main Lobe---- ( The direction of maximum radiated field strength from an antenna, also called Major Lobe. )

Malicious (harmful) Interference---- ( Intentional, deliberate obstruction of radio transmissions. )

MARS---- ( Military Affiliate Radio Service. )

Marker---- ( See "frequency marker". )

Matchbox ---- ( Antenna Tuner--Impedance-matching device that matches the antenna system input impedance to the transmitter, receiver, or transceiver output impedance. )

Maximum Useable---- ( MUF--(The highest frequency that allows a radio wave to reach a desired destination). )

Maximum Useable Frequency (MUF)---- ( The highest-frequency radio signal that will reach a particular destination using "sky-wave propagation", or "skip". The MUF may vary for radio signals sent to different destinations. )

Mayday---- ( From the French "m'aidez" (help me), MAYDAY is used when calling for emergency assistance in voice modes. Emergency (10-33); distress call. )

MCP---- ( Multimode Communications Processor. )

MC---- ( Megacycles. )

MDS---- ( Multipoint Distribbution Service; Minimum Discernible (or detectable) signal. )

Mean Anomaly (MA)---- ( An angle that increases informally with time, starting at perigee (point nearest, reached by object orbiting), used to indicate where a satellite is located along its orbit. MA is usually specified at the reference epoch time where the "Keplerian" elements are defined. For AO-10 the orbital time is divided into 256 parts, rather than degrees of a circle, and MA (sometime called phase) is specified from 0 to 255. Perigee is therefore at MA = 0 with apogee at MA = 128. )

Mean Motion---- ( The "Keplerian" element to indicate the complete number of orbits a satellite makes in a day. )

Mean Power---- ( The average power supplied to an antenna transmission line during an interval of time sufficiently long compared with the lowest frequency encountered in the modulation taken under normal operating conditions. )

Maga---- ( The metric prefix for 10*6, or times 1,000,000. )

Megacycles---- ( Million cycles per second. This terminology has been replaced by MegaHertz (MHz) . )

Megahertz---- ( Million hertz. )

Memory Bank ---- ( A set of memory channels organized into a group. )

Memory Effect ---- ( Rechargeable batteries such as Ni-cad and Ni-MH types that may be getting capacity as a result of repeated non-full charge/dis-charge cycles. )

Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (MOSFET)---- ( A field-effect transistor that forms its electric field through an insulating oxide layer. )

Metric Prefixes---- ( A series of terms used in the metric system of measurement. We use metric prefixes to describe a quantity as compared to a basic unit. The metric prefixes indicate multiples of 10. )

Metric System---- ( A system of measurement developed by scientists and used in most countries of the world. This system uses a set of prefixes that are multiples of 10 to indicate quantities larger or smaller than the basic unit. )

MF---- ( Medium Frequency--300-3,000 kHz. )

mH---- ( Millihenry. )

MHz---- ( Megahertz. )

mi---- ( Mile, statute (unit of length). )

mi/h---- ( mile per hour. )

mi/s---- ( mile per second. )

mic---- ( Microphone. )

Micro---- ( The metric prefix for 10*-6, or divide by 1,000,000. )

Microphone---- ( A device that converts sound waves into electrical energy. )

Mids---- ( EU (European) Band. )

Mike---- ( Microphone. )

Milli---- ( The metric prefix for 10*-3, or divide by 1000. )

min---- ( Minute (time). )

Mirosat---- ( Collective name given to a series of small amateur satellites having store-and-forward capability(OSCARs 14-19, for example). )

MIX---- ( Mixer. )

mm---- ( millimeter. )

Mobile---- ( CB radio in car, truck, boat, motorcycle, or bicycle. )

Mobile Device---- ( A radio transmitting device designed to be mounted in a vehicle. A push-to-talk (PTT) switch generally activates the transmitter. )

Mobile unit---- ( Car, other vehicle. )

MOD---- ( Modulator. )

Mode---- ( A type of ham radio communication; examples are "frequency modulation" (FM), "slow-scan television" (SSTV) and "packet radio". )

Mode A---- ( In AMTOR, an automatic repear request (ARQ) transmission method. )

Mode B---- ( In AMTOR, a forward error correction (FEC) transmission method. )

Modem---- ( Modulator/Demodulator; a device that connects between a data terminal and communication line (or radio). Also called data set or Short for modulator/demodulator. A modem modulates a radio signal to transmit data and demodulates a receiver signal to recover transmitted data. )

Modulate---- ( To vary the amplitude, frequency, or phase of a radio-frequency signal; Talking. )

Modulating---- ( Talking; Talking on the CB. )

Modulation---- ( Audio portion of your signal. )

Modulation---- ( The process of varying some characteristic (Amplitude, Frequency or phase of an RF Carrier for the purpose on conveying information OR the process of varying an RF carrier in some way (the amplitude or the frequency, for example) to add an information signal to be transmitted. )

Modulation booster---- ( Microphone pre-amp/compressor either external or internal to the microphone or radio. External devices between the mike and rig are called Modulators. )

Modulator---- ( Some refer to it as a linear. It’s actually a device to boost the transmit audio. )

Monitoring---- ( Listening. )

Monitor Mode---- ( One type of packet radio receiving mode. In monitor mode, everything transmitted on a packet frequency is displayed by the monitoring TNC. This occurs whether or not the transmissions are addressed to the monitoring staTION++. )

Moonraker---- ( A 4 element cross polarized directional antenna
formerly made by Antenna Specialist Company. Now, a catch-all word for any directional
antenna roughly matching the same description.
)

MSO---- ( Message storage operation. )

MUF---- ( Maximum usable frequency. )

Multimeter---- ( An electronic test instrument used to measure current, voltage and resistance in a circuit. Describes all meters capable of making these measurements, such as the volt-ohm-miiiameter (VOM), vacuum-tube voltmeter (VTVM) and field-effect transistor VOM (FET VOM). )

Multimode Transceiver---- ( Transceiver capable of SSB, CW and FM operation. )

Multiplier---- ( A circuit that purposely creates some desired "harmonic" of its input signal. For example, a frequency multiplier that takes energy from a 3.5 MHz exciter and puts out RF at 7 MHz is a two times multiplier, usually called a frequency doubler. )

Muppet Channels---- ( UK Band . )

mV---- ( millivolt. )

mW---- ( milliwatt. )

"The copyright issue is a sticky one for Web site owners and their employees, particularly contractors.
Currently in the United States, there are no laws that specifically address copyright issues in the online world.
However, the U.S. courts have ruled that existing copyright laws governing the print world can be applied to the online world."
