Technical Terms & Abbreviations---
Means practical knowledge on electrical systems including installing, maintaining, operating, or repairing electrical equipment.




h---- ( Hecto (prefix for 10*2. )

H---- ( Henry (unit of Inductance). )

Half Duplex---- ( A mode of communication in which a user transmits at one time and receives at another time. )

Half-wave dipole---- ( The basic antenna consisting of a length of wire or tubing,
open and fed at the center. The entire antenna is ½ wavelength long at the desired operating frequency.
)

Ham---- ( An amateur radio operator. )

Ham Band---- ( A range of frequencies on which amateur communications are authorized. )

Ham-Bands-only receiver---- ( A receiver designed to cover only the bands used by amateurs. Usually refers to the bands from 80 to 10 meters, sometimes including 160 meters. )

Ham Radio---- ( Another name for Amateur Radio. )

Ham Radio Operator---- ( A person holding a written authorization to operate an amateur station. An Amateur Radio Operator. )

Hamster---- ( Ham operator on CB frequency or one who "hams" on CB. )

Hand-held---- ( A small, lightweight portable transceiver small enough to be carried easily; Also called HT (for Handie-Talkie, a Motorola trademark). )

Handle---- ( A CB users callsign and/or nickname (Usage differs between SSB-DX-AM). )

Hang Time---- ( The short period following a transmission that allows others who want to access the repeater a chance to do so; A "courtesy beep" sounds when the repeater is ready to accept another transmission. )

Harmful Interference---- ( Interference which endangers the functioning of a radionavigation service or of other safety services or seriously degrades, obstructs or repeatedly interrupts a radicommunication service operating i accordance with the Radio Regulations. )

Harmonic---- ( Multiple of a fundamental frequency; A signal occurring at some integral multiple (such as two, three, four) of a "fundamental" frequency. )

Harmonics---- ( Signals at exact multiples of the operating (or "fundamental") frequency (2x, 3x, 4x, etc.). )

HDLC---- ( High-level data link control procedures as specified in ISO 3309. )

Health and Welfare traffic---- ( Messages about the well being of individuals in a disaster area. Such messages must wait for "Emergency and Priority traffic" to clear, and results is advisories to those outside the disaster area awaiting news from family and friends. )

Hertz (Hz)---- ( The standard unit used to measure frequency (an alternating-current frequency of one Hertz equals one complete cycle per second) . )

HF---- ( High Frequency ~ 3-30 MHz range signals, normally the 1.9 MHz band is also . )

HFO---- ( High-frequency oscillator; heterodyne frequency oscillator. )

High Freqs (pronounced Freaks)---- ( The radio frequencies above CB channel 40 used by CB pirates. )

High Frequencies---- ( The radio frequencies from 3 to 30 MHz. )

High-pass Filter---- ( A filter designed to pass all frequencies above a cutoff frequency, while rejecting frequencies below the cutoff frequency. )

Hole---- ( A positively charged "particle" that results when an electron is removed from an atom in a semiconductor crystal structure. )

Horizon---- ( An imaginary line. )

Hose---- ( Coaxial cable. )

Host---- ( As used in packet radio, a computer with applications programs accessible by remote stations. )

HPF---- ( Highest probable frequency; High Pass Filter--" A filter that allows signals above the cutoff frequency to pass through and attenuates signals below the cutoff frequency. )

Hybrid (hybrid combiners)---- ( A device used to connect two signal generators to one receiver for test purposes, without the two generators affecting each other. )

Hz---- ( Hertz (unit of frequency, 1 cycle/s). )
