* The stormy petrel of Albania, Essad had been an officer in the Ottoman Imperial Army, then served as Governor of Tirana from 1912. Proclaimed himself King of the Albanians at Lezhe 27th April 1913, receiving recognition from the Serbian troops and civil authorities there, until persuaded to accept the provisional government established by the Great Powers and joined the cabinet as Minister for the Interior 2nd July 1913. He subsequently quarrelled with President of the Council, Ismail Qemal Bey, and established a separate administration at Durazzo 18th September 1913. Established a rival government centred over  Durazzo, Tirana and Kavaja, headed by himself as Presdt of the Council and a legislature known as the Middle Albanian Senate (Pleqësia I Shqipërisë së Mesme) 12th October 1913. Accepted the creation of the sovereign principality of Albania by the great powers and led the delegation to Neuwied to formally offer the crown to Prince Wilhelm of Wied. Appointed as General of the Albanian Army 7/3/1914, Minister for the Interior, War and Defence 14 Mar-19 May 1914. Rebelled against the prince and plunged the country into civil war. Proclaimed as Presdt and C-in-C by the Senate 22nd October 1914, and joined the Allied War front. Subsequently went into exile at Salonika 4th January 1916 after the country had been overrun by the Austrians. Proclaimed again as King of the Albanians, by the National Assembly in early June 1920. While returning for his inauguration in Albania on 13th June 1920, he was assassinated in front of the Hotel Continental in Paris, aged 56 years. His murderer was an Albanian nationalist named Averni Rustam, a follower of one of Essad's political opponents. Rcvd: KCMG (5.5.1916), GC of the Orders of SS Maurice & Lazarus of Italy (x.2.1914), and Franz Joseph of Austria (x.2.1914), the Imperial Orders of the Osmans (Nishan-i-Osmanieh) 1st class and the Nobility (Nishan-i-Majidieh) 1st class, Imtiaz and Liaqat Medals of Turkey, etc.
** Also given by different Albanian sources as 1901, 1903, 1905, 1908, 1911 and after 1910. This confusion being caused by a desire by King Zog and his mother to mask a change in the dates of birth of the four youngest daughters, in an effort to improve their marriage ability amongst Western European suitors. However, one official source clearly states that their father died at Burgajet Castle, in Rajab 1322 AH (month ending 11th October 1904 AD), aged 44 years. This accords with the fact that Ahmet Zogolli assumed charge of his family after a period of guardianship, when he reached the Muslim age of maturity of 16 years in 1911. Lastly, the engraving on Princess Adilé’s gravestone at Thiais Cemetery in Paris gives her year of birth as 1890. Consequently, the dates have been recalculated. My efforts at doing so are given in parentheses after the official dates, by using the equivalent Hijra month and day of the official date then calculating the AD equivalent again for the corrected year.
