GENEALOGY

1822 - 186x Rukirabasaija Kaboyo Omuhundwa Olimi V Kasusunkwanzi I, Omukama of Toro, eldest son of Rukirabasaija Agutamba Kyebambe III Nyamutukura, Omukama of Bunyoro-Kitara, by his wife, a lady of the Ababwiju clan. Rebelled and established his own kingdom at Kaboyo during his father's lifetime. Spurned the succession to Bunyoro-Kitara on his father's death, ca. 1800. He d. 186x, having had issue:
 
186x - 1866 Rukirabasaija Kazana Ruhaga. Succeeded on the death of his father. He was k. by his brother Nyaika, ca. 1866.
 
1866 - 1871 Rukirabasaija Kasunga Nyaika Kyebambe IV, Omukama of Toro (first time) - see below.
 
1871  Rukirabasaija Kato Rukidi I, Omukama of Toro. Rebelled against his uncle Kyebambe IV and seized the throne, with the help of the Bugandans, 1871. Deposed by his subjects, two months later. He d. at Kibale, not long after.
 
1866-1871 and 1871-1872 Rukirabasaija Kasunga Nyaika Kyebambe IV, Omukama of Toro. Killed his brother and usurped the throne, 186x. Forced to flee when Toro was invaded by a Bugandan army sent in support of Prince Kato, 1871. He d. ca. 1872, having had issue, fourteen sons, including:
 
1872 - 1875 Rukirabasaija Nyaika Mukabirere Olimi VI, Omukama of Toro. Succeeded on the death of his father, ca. 1872. Captured and deported to Bunyoro by an army sent by Omukama Chwa II Kabarega, 1875. Escaped when British and Buganda forces invaded Bunyoro in 1893/1894 but died before he was able to return to Toro. m. several wives including, Vikitoria Kahinju, of the Ababopi clan, sister of Togwe Rusoke, sometime Prime Minister of Toro. He d. in buganda, 1894 having had issue:
 
1875  Rukirabasaija Isingoma Rukidi II, Omukama of Toro. Succeeded his brother after his capture by the Bunyoro army in 1875, but was not able to maintain his position for very long and abdicated in favour of his brother.

1875 - 1876 Rukirabasaija Kakende Nyanuyonjo, Omukama of Toro. Raised to the throne with the help of the Buganda army, ca. 1875, but returned with the army when they left Toro, ca. 1876. He d. from smallpox in Buganda (bur. Mperre).
 
1876 - 1877 Rukirabasaija Katera, Omukama of Toro. Raised to the throne by the people, when Kakende Nyanuyonjo failed to return from Buganda. Deposed by his brother, Rubabi Kyebambe VI, ca. 1877.
 
1875 and 1877-1879 Rukirabasaija Rubabi Kyebambe V, Omukama of Toro. Succeeded on the abdication of his brother, ca. 1875. Fled when another Bunyoro army was sent into Toro, under the leadership of Chief Kikukule of Bugangaizi. Fled to Buganda. Returned and deposed his brother, ca. 1877. Deposed by his brother, Kakende Nyanuyonjo, 1879.
 
1875-1876 and 1879-1880 Rukirabasaija Kakende Nyanuyonjo, Omukama of Toro. Raised to the throne with the help of the Buganda army, ca. 1875, but returned with the army when they left Toro, ca. 1876. Returned with another Bugandan army and deposed his brother, Rubabi Kyebambe V, 1879. Expelled by a Bunyoro army in 1880, and took refuge, firstly in Ankole, and later in Buganda. He d. from smallpox in Buganda, before 1885 (bur. Mperre).
 
1880 - 1891 Interregnum under Bunyoro rule. Ruburwa, maternal uncle of Omukama Chwa II Kabarega of Bunyoro-Kitara, appointed as Chief of Toro.
 
1891 - 1928 Rukirabasaija Daudi Kasagama Kyebambe VI, Omukama of Toro, MBE (c 1.1.1918). b. ca. 1874, educ. privately at Mengo. Fled with his mother and two brothers to Ankole, and on the murder of the latter to Buganda. Signed a Treaty with the IBEAC and was proclaimed at Kabarole by Lord Lugard, 14th August 1891. Installed at Kaberole, 16th August 1891. Received into the Anglican Church and Baptised by Bishop Tucker, taking the name of Daudi (David), 15th March 1896. Crowned at St John's Cathedral, Kabarole, by the Rev. G.R. Blackledge, 16th March 1908. m. several wives according to ancient custom, but repudiated all of them save his eleventh and favourite wife, whom he remarried according to Angican rites at, St John's Cathedral, Kabarole, 4th May 1896, Damali Tibaitwa, daughter of Nikodemo Kakurora, Chief of Kitagwenda. He d. at Kyangabukama, Mwenge, 31st December 1928, having had issue, seven sons and five daughters:
 
1928 - 1965 H.H. Rukirabasaija Sir George David Matthew Kamurasi Rukidi III, Omukama of Toro. b. at the Royal Palace, Kabarole, 6th March 1904, educ. Nyakasura Sch., Kabarole, Mengo High Sch., and King's Coll., Budo. Inspector Uganda Police 1926, Succeeded on the death of his father, 31st December 1928. Crowned at St John's Cathedral, Kabarole, 29th January 1929. Attended the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in London 1953 (rcvd: Coron. medal). Founder and Sovereign Grand Master of the Order of the Lion, Crown and Shield of Toro. Knighted 2/6/1962. Rcvd: Silver Jubilee (1935), Coron. (1937 and 1953), Royal Visit (1954) and Uganda Independence (1962) medals, Cdr. Order of the Shield and Spears of Buganda. Hon. Lieut. 4th (Uganda) Btn. KAR 1928-1930. m. five wives according to tradition including, (first) 1935, Lady Byanjeru Kezia Bonabana (b. 1917; d. after May 1998), daughter of Omwami Nikodemo Kakoro, MBE, sometime Prime Minister of Toro. He d. at the Royal Palace, Kabarole, 21st December 1965 (bur. Karambi Gasani), having had issue:
 
1965 - 1995 H.M. Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Koboyo Olimi III [Rutabingwa rwa Muhokya Omwana wa Rusasuka], Omukama of Toro. b. at the Royal Palace, Kabarole, 9th September 1945, educ. Nyakasura Sch., Kabarole, Budo Primary Sch., Sherborne, Dorset, and Makerere Univ. Succeeded on the death of his father, 21st December 1965. Crowned at St John's Cathedral, Kabarole, 2nd March 1966. Deposed on the abolition of the Kingdoms by the Obote government, 8th September 1967. Retired to Kenya where he became a Tea planter. Returned to Uganda after the fall of the Obote regime. Ambassador to Cuba. Restored July 1993. m. 1987, Best Kemigisa Kaboyo (b. 1969), of the Batuku clan. He d. 26th August 1995, having had issue, one son and two daughters:
 
 
 
 
 
1995  H.M. Rukirabasaija Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, King Omukama of Toro. b. 1992, educ. Blackheath Primary Sch., London and the International Sch., Kampala. Succeeded on the death of his father, 26th August 1995. Crowned at St. John's Cathedral, Kabarole, 12th September 1996. Reigns under the guardianship of his mother Best Kemigisa Kaboyo, his uncle Prince James Mugenyi, and President Museveni of Uganda.
