Muhammad al-Munsif [Moncef] Pasha, Bey and
Possessor of the Kingdom of Tunis. b. at La
Manouba (or Sidi-Bou-Saïd), 4th March 1881,
eldest son of H.H. Muhammad al-Nasir Pasha, Bey
and Possessor of the Kingdom of Tunis, GCMG, educ.
privately. Appointed as Heir Apparent and invested with
the title of Bey al-Mahalla and the style
of His Highness, 30th April 1942.
Proclaimed on the death of his cousin, 19th
June 1942. Attempted to free Tunis from French control
and established an independent government in 1942.
Deposed by the Free French on the false grounds that he
was a Vichy collaborator, 14th May 1943.
Abdicated 6th July 1943. Exiled to Laghouat in
southern Algeria, then Ténes, and removed to Pau in
France in 1945. Lieut-Gen. Beylical Army 30/4/1942, Field
Marshal 19/6/1942. Sovereign and Grand Master of the Nishan
al-Ahad al-Aman, Nishan ad-Dam,
and Nishan al-Iftikhar. Rcvd: the Nishan
al-Ahad al-Aman al-Murassa
(1.5.1942), Nishan ad-Dam, and GC of the Nishan
al-Iftikhar while a young prince, GC of the Orders
of the Legion of Honour in brilliants, and the Black Star
of Benin, and Officer of the Order of the Academic Palmes
of France, GC of the Sharifian Order of Alawi of Morocco,
etc. m. (first) at Sidi-Bou-Saïd, October 1900, Lalla
Traki [Traqui] (d. 18th April 1919, and
bur. Turbat al-Bey, the Madina, Tunis), eldest
daughter of H.H. Muhammad al-Hadi Pasha, Bey and
Possessor of the Kingdom of Tunis. m. (second) (div.)
Lalla Zubaida, a descendant of the saint, Sidi
'Ali Azzouz, of Zaghouan. m. (third) (div.
1942) H.H. Princess (Lalla) Habiba Beya (b.
at Manouba, 1888; d. 21st December
1969), former wife of Lieutenant-General Si Ahmad
Gara, and elder daughter of Prince Murad Bey. m.
(fourth) August 1942, Lalla Arbiya (d. 30th
July 1974), who shared her husband's exile, former
Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Habiba, former wife of Fnoun,
daughter of Si Muhammad al-Klibi. He d. in
exile at Villa Cadaval, Pau, France, 1st
September 1948 (bur. Sidi BelHasan Mausoleum,
Jellaz), having had issue, three sons and one daughter,
