1949 - 1960 H.H. Shaikh 'Ali bin 'Abdu'llah Al-Thani, Ruler of Qatar, KBE (c. 13.8.1958). b. at Doha, 1895, eldest son of H.E. Shaikh 'Abdu'llah bin Jasim Al-Thani, Ruler of Qatar, CIE, educ. privately. Appointed as Heir Apparent by his father, 30th June 1948. Succeeded on his abdication, and installed on the same day at Al-Rayyan Palace, Doha, 20th August 1949. Abdicated in favour of his second son, 24th October 1960. His reign witnessed the first shipment of onshore oil, ushering in Qatar's entry into the oil producing world. He introduced the first modern administrative framework, established a police and security force, and received the first permanent British Political Officer. He was also the first Qatari ruler to visit Europe. Rcvd: Coron. medal (1953). m. (first) … m. 1960 - 1972 H.H. Shaikh Ahmad bin 'Ali Al-Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar. b. at Doha, 1917, second son of H.H. Shaikh 'Ali bin 'Abdu'llah Al-Thani, Ruler of Qatar, KBE, educ. privately. Succeeded on the abdication of his father, and installed at the Rayan Palace, Doha, 24th October 1960. Assumed the style and title of Amir of the State of Qatar when Qatar was granted full independence, 3rd September 1971. Deposed in favour of his cousin, 22nd February 1972. Settled in Dubai. Attended the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in London, 1953. Rcvd: Coron. medal (1953). m. (first) Shaikha …m. (second) 4th August 1950, a daughter of Faleh bin Khalid. m. (third) 11th February 1953, a daughter of Shaikh Fahad bin Jasim Al-Thani. m. (fourth) 9th October 1957, Shaikha Mariam bint Rashid al-Maktum, daughter of H.H. Shaikh Rashid bin Sa'id al-Maktum, Ruler of Dubai, GCMG, sometime Vice-Presdt. of the UAE, by his wife, H.H. Shaikha Latifa bint Hamdan al-Nahayan, daughter of H.E. Shaikh Hamdan bin Zaid al-Nahayan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi. He d. at London, 25th November 1977, having had issue, seven sons and one daughter:
