1501 - 1524 H.M. Zill-u'llah 'Abu'l Muzaffar Sultan Ismail Shah I, Shahanshah of Persia. b. 17^th July 1487, third and youngest son of 'Abu'l Wilayat Sultan Haidar Safawi, Grand Master of the Safawi Order, by his wife, Alam Shah Begum [Halima Begi Agha], daughter of 'Abu'l Nasir Hasan Khan [Uzun Hasan], Khan of the Aq Quyunlu, by his wife, Princess Theodora Comnena, daughter of H.M. John IV, Emperor of Trebizond. Imprisoned with his brother and mother at Isfahan 1489-1493, nominated Grand Master of the Safawi Order 1494, and took refuge in Lahijan 1494-1499, conquered Shirwan 1500 and defeated the Aq Quyunlu, 1501. His Empire extended from Baghdad in the West to Herat in the East. Proclaimed as Shahanshah at Tabriz, July 1501. Crowned there, 12^th March 1502. Established Shi'ism as the state religion. m. 1) Shahzada 'Abu'l Fath Sultan Tahmasp Mirza, who succeeded as H.M. 'Abu'l Muzaffar Tahmasp Shah I, Shahanshah of Persia (s/o Shah-Begi) - see below.
2) Shahzada 'Abu'l Ghazi Sultan Alqas Mirza. b. at Tabriz, 15^th March 1515 (s/o Khan-Begi), educ. privately. Governor of Shirvan 1538-1547. Rebelled against his brother Tahmasp, then defected to the Ottomans in 1547. Captured and imprisoned at the Fortress of Qahqahan 1549. m. Khadija Sultan Khanum (d. after 1559). He was k. in prison at Qahqahan, 9^th April 1550, having had issue, two sons:
- a) Sultan Ahmad Mirza. Imprisoned with his father at Qahqaha. He was k. in prison with his brother, December 1567/January 1568.

3) Shahzada 'Abu'l …Sultan Rustam Mirza. b. at Maraghah, 13^th September 1517. He d.s.p. young (bur. Ardibil).
4) Shahzada 'Abu'l Nasir Sultan Sam Mirza. b. at Dizaward, Surluq, 28^th August 1518 (s/o Khan-Begi), educ. privately. Governor-General of Khorasan 1521-1529 and 1532-1534, and of Ardabil 1549-1571. Author and man of letters. Rebelled against his brother Tahmasp, captured and imprisoned at the Fortress of Qahqahan. m. a daughter of Husain Khan-e Shamlu. He d. in prison at Qahqahan, December 1567, having had issue, two sons and one daughter:
- a) Sultan … Mirza. Imprisoned with his father at Qahqaha. He was k. in prison with his brother, December 1567/January 1568.
- b) Sultan … Mirza. Imprisoned with his father at Qahqaha. He was k. in prison with his brother, December 1567/January 1568.
- a) Princess (Shahzadi 'Alamiyan) … Khanum. m. 1578, H.H. The Most Brilliant Prince Jesse ['Isa Khan Gorji] (d. 1580), Governor of Sakki 1558-1580, second son of H.M. The Most High King Levanti I , by the will of our Lord, King of Kings of the Abkhazis, Kartvelians, Ranians, Kakhetians and the Armenians, Shirvanshah and Shahanshah and Master of all the East and West, King of Kakheti, by his wife, H.M. The Most High Queen Tinatina, daughter of His Splendour The Pious Prince of High Rank Mamia I Gurieli, Duke of the Guria. She had issue - see Georgia (Kakheti).
Shahzada 'Abu'l Nasir Sam Mirza, also had a reputed son:

5) Shahzada 'Abu'l Fath Sultan Muiz ud-din Bahram Mirza. b. at Surluq, 7^th September 1518 (s/o Shah-Begi), educ. privately. Governor of Khorasan 1529-1532, Gilan 1536-1537 and Hamadan 1546-1549. m. Zainab Sultan Khanum (m. second, after 1549, H.M. 'Abu'l Muzaffar Tahmasp Shah I, Shahanshah of Persia; and d. at Qazvin, October 1570), sister of Imad ud-din Shirvani. He d. 16^th September 1550 (bur. Mashhad), having had issue, four sons and one daughter:
- a) Sultan Hasan Mirza (twin with his brother Husain?). Adopted by his uncle Tahmasp Shah I. He d. young (?).
- b) Sultan Husain Mirza. Governor of Sistan 1555-1557, Kandahar 1557-1576, Zamindawar and Garmsir 1558-1566. m. several wives, including (a) (k. by the Biyats, while defending Kalat fort for her son, before 1592). He d. at Kandahar, September/October 1576, having had issue, five sons and one daughter:
  - i) Sultan Muhammad Husain Mirza. b. at Kandahar, 1559, educ. privately. He was k. at Qazvin, 23^rd February 1577.
  - ii) Farzand Sultan Muzaffar Husain Mirza. b. at Kandahar, 1562, educ. privately. Governor of Kandahar 1578-1595. Surrendered Kandahar to Emperor Akbar I of India and entered his service, 1594. Granted the title of Farzand, and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 5,000 zat and 4,000 sowar 1594, retd. 1599. m. (first) a daughter of Malik Mahmud Khan, sometime Governor of Sistan. m. (second) a daughter of Sulaiman Mirza Ilkhshi, sometime Governor of Badakshan. He d. at Delhi, October 1603 (bur. there), having had issue, five sons and two daughters:

    - (2) Mirza Haidar Safawi. Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 500 zat and 150 sowar by Emperor Jahangir, prom. to 1,000 zat and 200 sowar in 1627. He d. 5^th September 1631, having had issue, two sons:
      - (a) Nawab Nauzar Khan [Mirza Anwar Safawi]. Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 900 zat by Emperor Shah Jahan, prom. to 1,000 zat and 200 sowar 1637, prom. to 400 sowar 1638, prom. to 2,000 zat and 1,400 sowar 1639, prom. to 2,500 zat and 2,000 sowar 1645, prom. to 3,000 zat 1646, prom. to 2,500 sowar 1647, and prom. to 4,000 zat and 3,000 sowar 29/1/1649.       - (b) Mirza Sultan Safawi. Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 1,000 zat by Emperor Shah Jahan, prom. to 400 sowar 1645, prom. to 1,500 zat and 500 sowar 1647, prom. to 2,000 zat 1650, prom. to 2,500 zat and 600 sowar 1651, prom. to 1,000 sowar 1652, prom. to 3,000 zat 1654, prom. to 1,200 sowar 1655, prom. 1,500 sowar 1656, prom. to 4,000 zat 1659 and 2,000 sowar in 1659, prom. to 3,000 sowar in 1666. Qurbegi 1650-1657, Subadar of Kabul 1675. m. a daughter of Bakshi ul-Mamalik, Nawab Islam Khan [Mir 'Abdu's Salam Mashhadi], sometime Paymaster-General and Subadar of Gujarat, Bengal and the Deccan. He d. in the Deccan, after 1675 (bur. near Jaisinghpur), having had issue, two sons:
        
        (i) Bakshi ul-Mamalik, Hisam ud-Daula, Nawab Shah Nawaz Khan Bahadur [Mirza Sadr ud-din Muhammad Khan Safawi]. Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 2,000 zat 1698, prom. to 2,500 zat and 800 sowar in 1703, prom. to 3,000 zat and 1,000 sowar 1704, prom. to 3,500 zat in 1706, prom. to 5,000 zat in 1707. Faujdar of Ramgir 1684, of Irij Bhander, and of Punar, Paymaster Corps of Gentlemen (Bakshi-i-Ahdiyan), Subadar of Khandesh 1702-1704, 3^rd Bakshi 1704-1706, 2^nd Bakshi 1706-1707. Granted the titles of Khan 1684, Mirza 1703, Hisam ud-Daula 1707, and Shah Nawaz Khan Bahadur by Emperor Bahadur Shah. He d. from wounds received fighting for Prince Azim us-Shan, having left the battlefield near Lahore with seventeen arrows sticking in his body, 18^th March 1712.
        
        (ii) Nawab Mirza Khan [Mirza Abu Talib Safawi]. He had issue, one son:
        
        1. Nawab Nazir Khan [Mirza Muhammad Yar Safawi]. He d. 1739.

    - (1) The elder daughter. m. as his first wife, Sultan Parviz Mirza (b. at Ajmer, 23rd June 1616; d. at Burhanpur, 28th October 1625), fourth son of H.M. Al-Sultan al-'Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, Khushru-i-Giti Panah, 'Abdu'l Fath Nur ud-din Muhammad Jahangir Padshah, Emperor of India, by his wife, Sahib-i-Jamal Begum Sahiba, daughter of Khwaja Hasan. She had issue - see India Pensioners (Delhi).
    - (2) Nawab Kandahari Begum Sahiba previously Kandahari Mahal. b. at Kandahar, before 1594. m. at Agra, 12^th December 1609, as his first wife, H.M. Al-Sultan al-'Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, 'Abu'l-Muzaffar Shihab ud-din Muhammad, Sahib-i-Qiran-i-Sani, Shah Jahan I Padshah Ghazi Zillu'llah [Firdaus-Ashiyani], Emperor of India (b. at Lahore, 15^th January 1592; d. at the Musamman Burj, Agra, 2^nd February 1666), fourth son of H.M. Al-Sultan al-'Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, Khushru-i-Giti Panah, 'Abu'l-Fath Nur ud-din Muhammad Jahangir Padshah [Jannat-Maksani], Emperor of India, by his wife, Jagat Gosain, Bilqis Makani Begum Sahiba, née Rajkumari Shri Mani Baiji Lall Sahiba, daughter of Raja Shri Udai Singhji, Raja of Marwar. She had issue, one daughter - see India Pensioners (Delhi).
  - iii) Nawab 'Iffat Khan [Sultan Rustam Mirza]. b. at Kandahar, 1565 (s/o the lady k. at Kalat), educ. privately. Governor of Zamindawar and Garmsir 1578-1589. Disputed control over Sistan and Zamindawar with his elder brother, Muzaffar Husain. Surrendered his rights to the government to Emperor Akbar I of India, 1594. Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 5,000 zat and 150 sowar 1594, prom. to 5,000 zat and 500 sowar 1613, prom. to 5,000 zat and 1,000 sowar 25/3/1617 o.s., prom. to 5,000 zat and 1,500 sowar 1618, prom. to 6,000 zat and 6,000 sowar 1613, retd. 1627. Subadar of Patna 1611-1613, Thatta 1613-1615, Kandahar 1617-1618, Allahabad 1622-1626, and Bihar 1626-1627. Received Multan in jagir together with several parganas in Baluchistan 1594, exchanged for Chittor 1596, and granted Pathankot 1597, exchanged for Raisin in 1599.     - (1) Nawab Iltifat Khan [Mirza Murad Safawi]. Appointed to an Imperial mansab of 2,000 zat and 700 sowar by Emperor Jahangir, prom. to 2,500 zat 1639, retd. 1642. Granted the title of Iltifat Khan 1616. m. a daughter of Khan-i-Khanan, Nawab Mirza 'Abdu'r Rahim Khan, sometime Subadar of Gujarat and Multan, by his wife, Mah Banu Begum. He d. at Patna, after 1657, having had issue, one son:
      - (a) Mirza Mukarram Khan [Mirza Murad Kam Safawi]. Appointed to an Imperial mansab of 800 zat, prom. to 1,000 zat 1639, prom. to 2,000 zat 1648, prom. to 3,000 zat and 3,000 sowar 1652, prom. to 4,000 zat and 4,000 sowar 1659, prom. to 5,000 zat 1659, and 5,000 sowar in 1667. Shahanshah-i-Ghazi 'Abu'l-Fath Mu'iz ud-din Muhammad Jahandar Shah Sahib-i-Qiran Padshah-i-Jahan Ghazi [Khuld Aramgah], Emperor of India (b. in the Deccan, 10^th May 1661; k. at Delhi, 11^th February 1713), eldest son of H.M. Sahib-i-Qiran-i-Mu'azam Shah 'Alamgir II Abu'l Nasir Sayyid Qutb ud-din 'Abdu'l-Muzaffar Muhammad Shah 'Alam Bahadur Shah I Padshah Ghazi [Khuld Manzil], Emperor of India, by his third wife, Nizam Bai Sahiba (d. at Delhi, 1692), daughter of Nawab Fathyawar Jang, of Hyderabad - see India Pensioners (Delhi).

    - (2) Nawab Suhrab Khan [Mirza Shahrukh Safawi]. b. ca. 1594, educ. privately. Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 1,000 zat and 400 sowar by Emperor Jahangir, prom. to 1,000 sowar 1618, Naib Mutsadi of Surat 1615-1618. m. 1619, a daughter of 'Itimad ud-Daula, Nawab Mirza Ghias ud-din Muhammad Khan Tehrani, sometime Wazir ul-Mamalik. He d. (drowned) in the River Jhelan, near Kahtai, Kashmir, 25^th March 1620.
    - (3) Nawab Kifayat Khan [Mirza Hasan Safawi]. Waqil-i-Mutlaq, Yamin ud-Daula, Nawab 'Abul-Hasan Asaf Khan, Khan-i-Khanan, sometime Chief Minister and C-in-C under Emperor Jahangir. He d. 1663, having had issue, two sons:
        
        (i) Nawab Kamyab Khan [Mirza Muhammad Saif ud-din Safawi] (s/o Shahzadi Begum). Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 500 zat and 200 sowar by Emperor Jahangir, prom. to 2000 zat and 1,500 sowar 1628, prom. to 2,000 sowar 1633, prom. to 2,500 zat 1633, prom. to 4,000 zat 1636, prom. to 2,500 sowar 1637, prom. to 3,000 sowar 1640, prom. to 5,000 zat and 5,000 sowar 1647, prom. to 6,000 zat and 6,000 sowar 1658. Nauras Banu Begum Sahiba (d. at Agra, 31^st May 1671), daughter of Mirza Muhammad Sharif. He was k. by a cannon-ball in the battle of Gokla Pass, 23^rd March 1659 (bur. Dargah of Khwaja Muin ud-din Chishti, Ajmer), having had issue, three sons and five daughters:
      - (a) Mirza Masum Khan. Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 500 zat 1653, prom. to 2,000 zat and 2,000 sowar 1659. Akhtabegi 1661, Qurbegi 1663, Faujdar of Tarhat 1664. He d. after 1670, having had issue:
        
        (i) Gowhar un-nisa Begum Sahiba. m. Amir ul-Umara, Samsam ud-Daula, Nawab Husain Sa'adat Khan Bahadur, Zulfiqar Jang [Sayyid Muhammad Taqi] (d. of wounds received at Delhi, 28^th February 1719), previously entitled Sayyid Salabat Khan, sometime Paymaster-General and Subadar of Kashmir, son of Sayyid Husain Sa'adat Khan, of the Marashi clan.       - (b) Mirza Mu'azzam Khan [Mirza Muhammad Mu'azzam Safawi] (s/o Navras Begum). Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 500 zat 1653, prom. to 1,500 zat and 1,500 sowar 1659, prom. to 2,500 zat and 2,500 sowar 1688, Faujdar of Gorakpur 1668. Qushbegi (Lord High Falconer) 1684-1698. Granted the title of Siyadat Khan 1662, prom. to Mirza Mu'azzam Khan 1685. He d. 1698, having had issue, two daughters:
        
        (i) Nawab Azam Banu Begum Sahiba. m. at Aurangabad, India, 14^th March 1683, Sultan Muhammad Kam Bakhsh (b. at Delhi, 25th February 1667; d. of wounds at Hyderabad, 13^th January 1709), fifth son of H.M. Al-Sultan al-'Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, 'Abu'l-Muzaffar Muhi ud-din Muhammad Aurangzeb Bahadur 'Alamgir Padshah Ghazi [Khuld Makan], Emperor of India, by his wife, Udaipuri Mahal. She d. at Delhi, 23rd February 1745 - see India Pensioners (Delhi).
        
        (ii) Another daughter. m. 1707, Nawab Shah Nawaz Khan [Mirza 'Ali Naqi] (k. in battle, at Jajau, near Dholpur, in Central India, 19^th June 1707), alias Mirza Safawi Khan, a grandson of H.M. 'Abbas Shah II, Shahanshah of Persia - see below.
      - (a) Nawab Rabia Daurani Dilrus Banu Begum Sahiba. m. at Agra, India, 18^th May 1637), H.M. Al-Sultan al-'Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, 'Abu'l-Muzaffar Muhi ud-din Muhammad Aurangzeb Bahadur 'Alamgir Padshah Ghazi, Emperor of India (b. at Dohad, 3^rd November 1619; d. at Aurangabad, 3^rd March 1707), fourth son of H.M. Al-Sultan al-'Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, 'Abu'l-Muzaffar Shihab ud-din Muhammad, Sahib-i-Qiran-i-Sani, Shah Jahan I Padshah Ghazi Zillu'llah, Emperor of India, by his wife, H.M. H.M. May 1690), Supt. of the Imperial jagirs 1689-1689 and Diwan of Bihar 1688, and of the Deccan 1689-1690, granted the title of Musavi Khan 1690, a poet under the nom de plume 'Fitrat', son of Mirza Fakhra, a Musavi Sayyid of Qum, by his wife, a daughter of Mir Muhammad Zaman, of Mashhad.

Patron, artist, poet. m. 1555, Princess (Shahzadi 'Alamiyan) Gowhar Sultan Begum (b. March/April 1540; d. from grief, at Qazvin, 19^th May 1577, bur. Mashhad), eldest daughter of his uncle, H.M. 'Abu'l Muzaffar Tahmasp Shah I, Shahanshah of Persia. He was k. at Qazvin, 23^rd February 1577 (bur. Mashhad), having had issue, one daughter:
  - i) Princess (Shahzadi 'Alamiyan) Gowhar Shad Begum. b. at Mashhad, April/May 1561 (d/o Princess (Shahzadi 'Alamiyan) Gowhar Sultan Begum). m. at Mecca, after 1587, Amir Nasir ud-din Husain (d. at Taif, Arabia, 1614; bur. Mecca), son of Sayyid Ibrahim Shirazi. She had issue, one daughter.
- c) Sultan Badi uz-Zaman Mirza. Governor of Sistan 1558-1577. He was k. with his son on the orders of H.M. Shah Ismail II, at Sistan, ca. February 1577, having had issue, one son and one daughter:
  - i) Sultan Bahram Mirza. b. 1575. He was k. with his father on the orders of H.M. Shah Ismail II, 1577.
  - i) A daughter. m. at Qazvin, October/November 1591, Shah Verdi Khan (k. 1597), sometime Governor of Luristan, son of Muhammad Khan 'Abbasi, sometime Governor of Luristan.
6) Shahzada 'Abu'l …Sultan Husain Mirza. b. before 11^th December 1520. He d. young.
1) Princess (Shahzadi 'Alamiyan) "Fulana" Begum. m. as his second wife, before 14^th May 1513, Prince (Shahzada) Murad Effendi (b. at Amasya, 1495; d. at Isfahan, Persia, May 1519), elder son of Prince (Shahzada) Sultan Ahmed Khan, Crown Prince of Turkey, by his wife, Princess Bul-bul Khanum Effendi, daughter of Prince (Shahzada) Ahmed Effendi - see Turkey.
2) Princess (Shahzadi 'Alamiyan) Janish Khanum. b. 26^th February 1507. m. (first) at Hamadan, 24^th August 1518, Amir-i-Dubaj Muzaffar Sultan Gurkhan (k. at Tabriz, 23^rd September 1536), sometime Governor of Rasht and Fuman 1516-1535, son of Amir Hisam ud-din, sometime Governor of Rasht and Gilan. 3) Princess (Shahzadi 'Alamiyan) Pari-Khan Khanum (d/o Shah-Begi Khanum). m. at Bunab, near Nabab-i-Maraghah, 4^th October 1521, Sultan Khalil (d. 5^th November 1535), Governor of Shirvan 1523-1536, son of Shaikh Shah Sultan Ibrahim bin Farrukh Yasar, sometime Governor of Shirvan, by whom she had no issue. m. (second) 1539, Darvish Muhammad Khan (d. 1551), sometime Governor of Shakki son of Hasan Sultan. She d. 1536.
4) Princess (Shahzadi 'Alamiyan) Khair un-nisa Begum. m. 1537, Shah Nur ud-din Nimatu'llah Baqi Yazdi (d. at Hamadan, 21^st July 1564, bur. there), son of Mir Nizam ud-din 'Abdu'l Baqi Yazdi. She d. 12^th March 1564 (bur. Hamadan), having had issue, two sons by her first husband and one daughter by her second.
5) Princess (Shahzadi 'Alamiyan) Shah Zainab Khanum. b. 1519. m. Muhammad Khan Sharaf Ughali Takalu (d. 1556).
6) Princess (Shahzadi 'Alamiyan) Farangis Khanum.
