Zill-u'llah 'Abu'l Muzaffar Sultan Ismail
Shah I, Shahanshah of Persia. b. 17th
July 1487, third and youngest son of 'Abu'l Wilayat
Sultan Haidar Safawi, Grand Master of the Safawi Order,
by his wife, Alam Shah Begum [Halima Begi Agha], daughter
of 'Abu'l Nasir Hasan Khan [Uzun Hasan], Khan of the Aq
Quyunlu, by his wife, Princess Theodora Comnena, daughter
of H.M. John IV, Emperor of Trebizond. Imprisoned with
his brother and mother at Isfahan 1489-1493, nominated
Grand Master of the Safawi Order 1494, and took refuge in
Lahijan 1494-1499, conquered Shirwan 1500 and defeated
the Aq Quyunlu, 1501. His Empire extended from Baghdad in
the West to Herat in the East. Proclaimed as Shahanshah
at Tabriz, July 1501. Crowned there, 12th
March 1502. Established Shi'ism as the state religion. m.
(first) Tajlu Begum (d. at Istakhr-i-Fars, near
Persepolis, before 7th May 1540 o.s.),
daughter of Abdi Beg Shamlu. m. (second) after
1507, Shah-Begi Khanum (d. at Shiraz, 1540; bur.
Ardibil), daughter of Mahmud Beg Bektash Musullu, of the
Aq Quyunlu. m. (third) Khan-Begi Khanum (d.
after 1547), a kinswoman of Sufi Khalil Beg Musullu. m.
(fourth) (div.) Bihruza Khanum (m. second,
1514, Takizada Ja'afar Shalabi), daughter of Hulefa,
Governor of Baghdad. m. (fifth) at Tabriz, 4th
November 1523 (or 1st March 1524 o.s.), a
daughter of Shaikh Shah Sultan Ibrahim bin Farrukh Yasar,
Governor of Shirvan. He d. at Manqutai, near
Sarab, 23rd May 1524 (bur. Ardibil),
