Reza Shah Pahlavi, Shahanshah of Iran. b. at
Alasht, Savad Kuh district, Mazandaran, 16th
March 1878, son of Major 'Abbas Quli Khan [Dadash Beg],
Savad Kuh Regt. educ. privately. Enlisted in the
Savad Kuh Regt. 1892, transf. Persian Cossack Bde. 1900,
prom.through the ranks to Sergt. Maj. 1903, cmsnd. 2nd
Lieut. 1911, prom. Lieut. 1912, Maj. Machine-Gun Coy.
1915, Lt-Col. Hamadan Inf. Atriad 1916, Cdt. of a Cossack
Regt at Teheran 1917, prom. Col. 1917, cdr. of a Cossack
Regt. at Kermanshah 1918, prom. Brig. 1919, Cdr. of the
infantry force sent against Bolshevik insurgents at
Enzeli 1920, declared himself cdr. of the Cossack Bde.
and prom. Brig-Gen. November1920. Staged a coup
d'etat 21st February 1921 and established a
new government with himself as Minister for War, Field
Marshal and C-in-C of the Army. Became Prime Minister in
addition to his other offices, together with the style of
His Serene Highness (Janab-i-Ashraf),
28th October 1923. Induced parliament to grant
him dictatorial powers and assumed the style of Hazrat-i-Ashraf,
February 1925. Became provisional Head of State, 31st
October 1925. Declared Shah by parliament, 12th
and took the oath of office 15th December
1925. Crowned at the Museum Hall of the Gulistan Palace,
Teheran, 25th April 1926. Deposed by the
Allies and forced to abdicate in favour of his appointed
heir 16th September 1941. Exiled to Mauritius
and later to South Africa. Supreme Commander of the
Imperial Iranian Armed Forces. Founded the Nishan-i-Pahlavi
(the Order of Pahlavi) in 1932, Nishan-i-Liaqat
(the Order of Merit), and Nishan-i-Iftikhar (the
Order of Glory) in 1937, and the Nishan-i-Humayun
(the Order of the August) on 15th February
