Michaela Gabriela Raphaela Gonzaga, Princess Imperial of
Brazil. b. at the Palace of São Cristóvão,
Quinta de Boa Vista, Rio de Janeiro, 29th June
1846, eldest daughter and heiress of H.M. Senhor Dom
Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil, KG, by his wife, H.M.
Empress Senhora Dona Thereza, educ. privately.
Heiress Presumptive with the title of Princess
Imperial of Brazil with the style of Her
Imperial Highness 11th June 1847 to 19th
July 1848, and from 10th January 1850 to 5th
December 1891. Regent of the Empire 25th May
1871-31st March 1872, 20th March-28th
September 1876, 30th June 1887-22nd August
1888, when she signed the decree for the abolition of
slavery, 13th May 1888, which freed 700,000
souls and earned her the epiphet A Redentora or
'the redemptress'. Succeeded her father as Head of the
Imperial House of Brazil and as Grand Mistress of the
Imperial Orders of Dom Pedro I, the Cross of Brazil, and
of the Rose, 5th December 1891. Rcvd:

at the Orléans Mausoleum, Royal Chapel of St Louis,
Dreaux, France, and reburied at the Imperial Mausoleum,
Cathedral of São Pedro de Alcântara, Petrópolis,
Brazil, 12th May 1971), having had issue,
three sons and one daughter (recognised as Princes and
Princesses of Orléans-Bragança, while in exile, 26th
