GENEALOGY
1835-1839 and
1842-1863 H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir-i-Kabir,
Amir Dost Muhammad Khan, Amir of Afghanistan. b.
at Kandahar, 23rd December 1792, eleventh son
of Amir ul-Umara, Sardar Payinda Khan
Muhammadzai, Sarfraz Khan, Chief of the Barakzai,
by his wife Zainab Begum, daughter of Musa Khan wakh
Jawansher Qizilbash, educ. privately. Granted
the title of Sardar by Mahmud Shah Durrani in
1800. Sepah Salar under Shah Shuja 1804, Dep. Wazir-i-Azam
1810-1817, placed in custody 1817-1818, Wazir-i-Azam
to Sultan 'Ali Shah Durrani 1818-1819, Governor of
Kohistan 1823-1827, and Kabul 1826-1837. Took possession
of Kabul from Sardar Sultan Muhammad Khan Telai,
and assumed the regency with the title of Wazir-i-Azam
1826. Formally reconciled with his brothers and uncles,
and agreed to a scheme dividing the government of the
country amongst them, 11th November 1826
Installed as Amir al-Mumenin at Siah Sung, Kabul,
1835. Deposed by the British and replaced by Shah Shuja,
8th May 1839. He fled to Bokhara 2nd
August 1839 but returned and surrendered to the British 2nd
November 1840. Placed under confinement until 1842.
Returned to Kabul and restored December 1842. Recognised
as Amir by the British 30th May 1855.
Conquered the lands north of the Hindu Kush in 1849,
Kandahar in 1855 and Herat in 1863, thus unifying
Afghanistan for the first time in fifty years. m.
(first) a sister of Mullah Rashid. No issue. m.
(second) a daughter of Mu'llah Sadiq 'Ali, a Bangash
chief, by whom he had issue, two sons and one daughter. m.
(third) at Charkar, ca. 1813, a daughter of Baqi Khan, of
Parvan, a Kohistani chief, by whom he had issue, one son.
m. (fourth) a daughter of Khojah Khanji, of
Kohistan, by whom he had issue, one daughter. m.
(fifth) before 1816, Khadija Begum, his chief wife,
daughter of Haji Rahmatu'llah Khan, of the Popalzai clan.
She had issue, five sons and one daughter. m.
(sixth) ca. 1823, a widow of his brother H.E. Sardar
Muhammad 'Azim Khan, Sardar-i-Kalan, and daughter
of Sadiq Khan Jawansher (Qizilbash). She had issue, two
sons and one daughter. m. (seventh) ca. 1830,
Gauhar Begum, a Kashmiri widow of H.M. Padshah Dur-i-Durran
Mahmud Shah, Shah of Afghanistan. She had issue, four
sons and four daughters. m. (eighth) a
granddaughter of Jahangir Khan, of Turi. She had issue,
one son. m. (ninth) Shahzadi Agha Taj,
daughter of H.R.H. Shahzada 'Abbas Mirza,
sometime Governor of Peshawar, of the Durrani dynasty, by
whom he had issue, four sons and two daughters. m.
(tenth) Samina Begum, daughter of Nazir Khairu'llah, a
wealthy merchant and former Hindu convert to Islam. She
had issue, one son and two daughters. m.
(eleventh) a sister of Mehtar Musa [Moss], a Ghilzai
chief of Zurmat. No issue. m. (twelfth) a sister
of the Chief of Kalat-i-Ghilzai. m. (thirteenth)
at the Haram Sarai, Kabul, Bibi Karmi, a Kashmiri widow
of Sardar Muhammad Rahim Khan, Amin ul-Mulk.
m. (fourteenth) 1843, a daughter of the chief of
Moradkhani. m. (fifteenth) Mahbuba Begum, daughter
of Taj Muhammad Khan Bamizai. She had issue, four
daughters. m. (sixteenth) a Hazara lady. m.
(seventeenth) a lady from the Ghilzai tribe. m.
(eighteenth) a lady from the Bajauri tribe. m.
(nineteenth) a lady from the Safi tribe. She had issue,
one son. m. (twentieth) a lady from the Turi
tribe. m. (twenty-first) a lady from the Siyahposh
Kafir. She had issue, one son and one daughter. m.
(twenty-second) a daughter of Nazir Mehr 'Ali Khan
Qizilbash. She had issue, one daughter. m.
(twenty-third) a sister of Azizu'llah Khan, of the Jabbar
Khel. She had issue, one son. m. (twenty-fourth) a
daughter of Agha Muhammad Khan Qizilbash. She had issue,
three sons and five daughters. m. (twenty-fifth)
second Hazara lady. He d. at Herat, 9th
June 1863, having had issue thirty-eight sons and
