Former Atlantic City Police Officer Thomas "Tad" DiLorenzo is recovering from cancer surgery.
"Hurley in the Morning" & HarryHurley.com has learned and confirmed that DiLorenzo, who was the subject of one the most unjust prosecutions in Atlantic County History, has suffered for the past several years, fighting a legal system, which ultimately turned on him ... when a jury found him not guilty of all serious charges ... but, convicted him of filing a false police report ... and this incredibly served him with a 5-year prison sentence.
Under the minimum/mandatory sentencing guidelines, DiLorenzo would have to serve a minimum of 18-months, before being eligible for release.
DiLorenzo was scheduled to be remanded to State Prison earlier this month ... until it was discovered that DiLorenzo has cancer. DiLorenzo has had surgery two days ago, performed by a specialist, out-of-state ... whereby a golf ball-sized tumor and one of his kidneys was removed.
Experts believe that a tumor of this size could leave DiLorenzo with a 50-50 chance of the cancer having already spread throughout his body.
Two jurors on the DiLorenzo jury publicly stated several years ago on "Hurley in the Morning" that they never believed that DiLorenzo would go to jail for the filing of a false police report ... or they never would have agreed to convict him of that charge.
Many people in DiLorenzo's situation would be permitted house arrest ... or some modified prison sentence. I have confirmed that DiLorenzo will be undergoing a substantial regimen of experimental cancer treatments ... in an attempt to aggressively beat the disease.
We are respectfully pleading to Atlantic County Prosecutor Jeff Blitz, to step in and work with DiLorenzo and recommend that his prison sentence be appropriately modified to allow him an opportunity to save his life.
In light of the fact that DiLorenzo was found not guilty of all charges ... except the filing of his own police report ... he certainly appears to be a perfect candidate for this type of intervention by the legal system.
